Review: The Nerd Who Loved Me by Vicki Lewis Thompson

One of the categories for the Shelfari Readers of Romance Spring Challenge is to read a book with a beta or an unlikely hero. For this category, I chose to read The Nerd Who Loved Me by Vicki Lewis Thompson. The hero in this story is Harry Ambrewster, a shy accountant who works for a Las Vegas casino. The same casino where the heroine, Lainie Terrell, dances as a showgirl. Harry is intrigued with Lainie from the beginning, but doesn't believe a showgirl would ever be interested in a solid, boring accountant like him. However, when Lainie asks him to babysit her son, Dexter, Harry can't resist. The kid is brilliant and he and Harry get along great. One night, just after the 4-year-old Dexter beat Harry in chess, a game which Harry just taught him how to play, Dexter's drunken father starts pounding on Lainie's apartment door. Harry takes the kid, shimmies down a tree, and runs. He picks up Lainie at the casino and they set off on a journey masquerading as husband and wife while Harry tries to protect Lainie and Dexter from her ex. Cute story. Nothing Earth-shattering, but I enjoyed it.

Good
