Animal that plays a major role:
The Red Pony by John Steinbeck

Moby Dick by Herman Melville
The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

Major character is (or turns into) an animal:
Must Love Dragons by Stephanie Rowe
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson

I pulled all of these off of my bookshelf. Wow, who knew (especially the horses on the covers, what's up with that?)! As you can see, finding books that fit the theme isn't very hard ;>).

Happy Reading!

Kristi
