Weekly Geeks 2009-04 -- Passions!

This week's Weekly Geek is inspired by Dewey's Knit-a-Long, a mini challenge of Dewey's Reading Challenge. Dewey had other passions besides reading and blogging. Knitting was one of them. This made me think, what are the Weekly Geek's other passions?

Right now, I'm going through a phase where I'm not really doing any of my hobbies outside of reading, but when I do, I mostly cross stitch. Here's one of my projects:

Rainforest Afghan -- This is what I've stitched so far:

Here's a close-up of part of it. The rainbow is done with a metallic thread, so it sparkles.

And this is what it will look like when I'm finally finished with it.

Here's one I finished in 2007, called Green Man:

I have pictures of other works-in-progress at my stitching blog -- Kris in Stitches. It hasn't been updated in a long time becuase I haven't stitched in a long time...Too busy reading ;o). But when I'm into it, I am extremely passionate about my stitching and spend a lot of time doing it.

Here are some other Weekly Geeks who cross-stitch:
Page After Page - Kim also likes to quilt - another craft I gave up a couple of years ago ;o).

Both reading and cross-stitching are very sedentary past-times, but before you start thinking I'm just a couch lump...I also love to sail (to the left is a picture of us putting our sailboat in the water at Christmas this year--that's me in the water), bike, and kayak with my husband and friends. We like to go to places we've never been before (by car or by boat) and a few old stand-by places (like Key West, we like that one a lot) and bike all over it! You can see a lot more and get a much better feel for a place by bike than you can by driving around it. Actually, it's supposed to be near 70 here tomorrow and we have a bike trip planned with friends. This usually involves stopping for lunch and about a 4-hour bike ride ;o).

So what about you? What are your passions? Feel free to link to some pictures...I love pictures ;o).

That parrot looks so cool and I cannot even see that it is cross-stitched. Great design.

Rainforest afghan looks lovely. It's a beautiful piece.

I'm another weekly geek who cross stitches, but I'm still putting my post together. I hope you'll come and look once it goes up.

Came over from Weekly Geeks, but noticed you're in St. Pete. I want to move to that area, but am stuck here in South Florida. Such a beautiful place, St. Pete

I cross stitch too! I love your afghan it's beautiful. That sparkly thread gets on my nerves sometimes, I hate when it gets all tangled up. Great post!

Wow, the parrot looks amazing! I'm sure the sparkly rainbow is really pretty. :-) I've always wanted to cross stitch but never learned. I own a few of those beginners' sets, but haven't actually done one yet.

Wow, that's a great cross-stitch pattern! I like your Green Man too. I used to cross-stitch, but I haven't done it in years.

Oh the afghan will look fantastic once you're finished.
Thank God I'm not the only one who is a bit behind on the winter challenge - and only a few more weeks to go...

I love your cross stitch, both the Green Man and the Rainforest. It's funny seeing how people do theirs as I tend to pick one colour and do all of it before moving on to the next one. You do it square by square which is interesting. May have to give that a go and work on areas rather than colours.
